Indiana's unemployment rate jumped to 6.4 percent during October, according to the monthly unemployment report issued by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development Friday.
In October, Indiana's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.4 percent. Indiana is below the national rate (6.5 percent) and is the lowest of all neighboring states.
Nationally, the unemployment rate also rose from 6.1 percent in September and from 4.8 percent in October 2007. There were nearly 9.5 million people unemployed in the United States in October, and close to 195,000 Hoosiers without jobs last month.
Lawrence County again had the highest unemployment rate in the area at 9.2 percent. That's an increase from 8.5 percent posted in September and from 5.4 percent recorded in October 2007. It ranked fifth-highest among the state's 92 counties.
Greene County ranked 52nd in the state with an unemployment rate of 5.7 percent in October. That's an increase over 5.2 percent in September and 4 percent in October 2007.
Jackson County ranked 61st in the state with a jobless rate of 5.5 percent for October. That's compared to 5.3 percent tallied in September and 3.6 percent recorded in October 2007.
Martin County reported 4.9 percent of its workers were unemployed in October, remaining unchanged from September. However, that's a jump from 3.4 percent reported in October 2007. October's rate ranked 75th among the state's 92 counties.
Orange County's October unemployment rate of 6 percent ranked 41st in the state. It slightly increased over September's 5.9 percent jobless rate, and also was an increase over the 4.6 percent tallied in October 2007.
Washington County's unemployment rate of 5.8 percent ranked 48th among the state's counties. It was the only unemployment rate in the area that dropped from the previous month's rate of 6.3 percent. In October 2007, Washington County had a jobless rate of 4.4 percent.
