State idles 33 in first worker layoffs because of lagging tax collections

INDIANAPOLIS - Dismissal notices for 33 state workers went out today - the first layoffs caused by a national economic recession and lagging state tax collections.

Mark Everson, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Administration, said the majority of the employees being let go work in the public works department, including architects, engineers and managers who work on state construction projects.
