Layoffs and pay cuts are nothing new among private sector employees these days as the country remains mired in recession.

Public sector jobs, however, have been slower to respond. As of January, the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette as well as Tippecanoe County had more employees on payroll than last year and were paying them more on average, according to a Journal & Courier analysis of data.
