Twin Lakes School board forgoes salary as budget cuts loom

As drastic budget cuts loom over corporations throughout the state, the TL board made a bold gesture Tuesday to help do their part to conserve.

"I don't know that anyone ran for a school board position because of the pay," said board vice president Susan Mrzlack, who initiated the discussion during financial talks at the monthly meeting.

Annually, the school corporation pays a total of $14,000 for the board's salary - each of the seven members receiving $2,000. According to Mrzlack, though on first glance this figure may pale in comparison to the crippling cuts state officials are promising, the extra funds could prove useful over a few years.

"It seems small now, but it could make a big difference over a few years," said Mrzlack, making a motion to eliminate the board's pay indefinitely. "That money will accumulate, and it could be used for many things. A new teacher, new equipment. It will accumulate."
