Vectren Corp. has won permission to buy electricity from a wind farm in northwest Indiana.
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is allowing Vectren to get up to 50 megawatts from the Fowler Ridge wind farm in Benton County, near Lafayette. The agreement will provide enough electricity to power about 15,000 homes a year and enable Vectren to supply 4 percent of customer demand with renewable sources of energy.
The power will come from the second phase of the Fowler Ridge wind farm, which will begin being built later this year.
It's the second agreement Vectren has made with a Benton County wind farm. In December 2007, the company signed a contract to buy 30 megawatts from the Benton County Wind Farm. That contract, also lasting 20 years, will provide enough power for 8,000 homes.
Vectren sells electricity in all or parts of Vanderburgh, Warrick, Spencer, Gibson, Posey, Pike and Dubois counties.
