SOUTH BEND — Thousands of South Bend students and teachers will soon be logging in online for virtual classes and assignments as school buildings remain closed in response to the coronavirus.

Because some households don’t have reliable internet access, the school district will deploy 35 buses with free Wi-Fi access across the city beginning Aug. 12, the first day of classes.

Buses will be stationed at numerous school buildings, parks and other locations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The locations will be posted on the school’s website, http://sb.school/, by Friday. Families can also call the district’s transportation department at 574-393-7000 for locations.

“We will have more Wi-Fi buses ready to go than we did (in the spring). We want to ensure that all of our students can do e-learning,” Superintendent Todd Cummings said during Monday’s school board meeting, when administrators unveiled the district’s reopening plans, which call for e-learning to continue until at least Oct. 5.
