MUNCIE — Muncie City Council has rejected a request for a zoning change necessary for a developer to build a convenience store and four-story hotel on the city's northwest side.

The council this week in a 9-0 vote declined to rezone the property, at the southeast corner of Morrison Road and Williamsburg Boulevard, from residential to variety business.

Several residents of the nearby Eagles Nest and Robinwood neighborhoods had expressed concern about the effect such a development could have on their lives and property. Some addressed the council at Monday's meeting.

The hotel and convenience store project had been planned by developer Surmukh "Mike" Singh of Fortville. The site, and Williamsburg Boulevard, are south of the Walmart store at 4801 N. Clara Lane.

A representative of Singh appeared at Monday night's city council meeting and requested a vote on the proposed zoning change be delayed until March "to give us a little bit more time to prepare some additional documentation."
