Hoosiers eager to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence next year can now purchase a special commemorative license plate for their vehicle.
The semiquincentennial license plate features horizontal stripes of red, white and blue. On its left side is a "250 America" logo on top of an outline of Indiana along with the yellow torch and stars from the state flag.
Indiana vehicle owners can buy the special plate — to replace their current license plate — by paying an additional $25 fee that will go toward funding Declaration of Independence anniversary celebrations across the state in 2026, including a major July 4 event at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis.
The plate may be ordered online through myBMV.com or by visiting a local license branch.
Indiana lawmakers last year directed the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to design a Declaration of Independence semiquincentennial license plate and make it available for purchase in 2025 and 2026.
Records show House Enrolled Act 1274 (2024) was supported by every member of the Indiana House and Senate, except state Sen. Mike Bohacek, R-Michiana Shores.
The Declaration of Independence was adopted July 4, 1776, by delegates to the Second Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia.
The document formally explains why the 13 colonies along the Atlantic coast decided to declare independence from Great Britain following the April 1775 start of the Revolutionary War.
The declaration's assertions that "all men are created equal" and endowed with the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," among others, have inspired revolutionaries and served as the basis for human rights guarantees around the world.
