United Autoworkers Local 977 President John Pence reported Thursday that General Motors has told the UAW there will be no new layoffs at the Marion plant next week.

The 469 UAW members who are currently laid off will remain idle, Pence said, and the plant will remain closed during second shift.

The situation is being reviewed by GM on a week-by-week basis, Pence said.

The plant is affected by an ongoing UAW strike at American Axle & Manufacturing that started in late Feb. GM has been forced to temporarily close or partially shut down about 26 manufacturing facilities in North America.
