MUNCIE, Ind. — The City of Muncie is attempting to help businesses and nonprofits that are in need of face masks during the pandemic through a new program providing them for free.

Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour and departments in his administration used money granted to the city though the federal CARES Act to buy a stockpile of face masks.

The money, which was allocated by the federal government, had set restrictions on how to spend the funds; one of the approved uses was buying personal protective equipment.

Ridneour said the city had received calls from organizations that were having issue sourcing masks, which demonstrated the need.

"We are trying to do what we can to slow the spread," Ridenour told The Star Press. "We wanted to make sure that businesses have plenty of masks available because there are a lot of small organizations that can struggle sourcing them.
