Baugo Community Schools officials are within $75,000 of their 2010 savings goal.
The BCS board of trustees approved early retirement requests from eight faculty members Monday night. The district is still determining which of those positions will have to be replaced, but Superintendent Jim DuBois said he believes the retirements will save the district about $400,000.
BCS is facing a roughly $725,000 loss in state-provided tuition. Last month the board voted to idle Jimtown North for at least two years, a move that's expected to save BCS at least $250,000 per year. DuBois said the district is currently looking for smaller cuts it can make that will generate saving.
Those cuts could include extracurricular activities. Last month the board tabled a motion to cut extracurricular activities from grades 6 and lower, a move that could save the district more than $15,000. The board wanted to see how many employees would retire before taking action.
DuBois also said it's possible the district will have to cut a secondary-level English teacher for the 2010-2011 school year. The reduction in force could save the district around $50,000.
