Early retirements to help Monroe County schools cut budget, save teaching jobs

Delivery of Reduction In Force layoff notices regarding 87 MCCSC positions starts today and must be completed by April 1, but the actual number of layoffs that become permanent will remain unclear for some time.

Monroe County Community School Corp. administrators cutting $5.8 million in the wake of state funding shortfalls are still juggling several factors that could help lower the ultimate layoff numbers. One of those factors, an early retirement-severance package that MCCSC comptroller Tim Thrasher said needed to attract at least 25 participants to achieve desired savings levels, seems ready to be implemented.
