Fort Wayne Community Schools to lay off 284 teachers in May

Fort Wayne Community Schools will lay off 284 teachers in May, though some will be called back to their jobs this fall.

District officials previously said they expected at least 91 teaching positions to be eliminated, but spokeswoman Krista Stockman said Wednesday additional layoffs are necessary to give the district flexibility as it relocates staff from soon-to-be-closed Elmhurst High School and Pleasant Center Elementary and hires teachers at its 11 LEAD schools.
