Guardian Industries eliminated 64 jobs at its Auburn factory, the company said Friday.
The plant had 238 employees before the layoffs, the Star in Auburn reported. The newspaper is published by Business Weekly parent KPC Media Group.
"Production at Guardian Auburn - an automotive glass plant - is directly tied to the success of the U.S. automotive industry," the company said in a statement from its headquarters at Auburn Hills, Mich. The company said the layoffs are due to reductions in automobile production by original equipment manufacturers.
"The reality is the domestic OEMs continue to cut back production, and we've maintained as long as we can," the company said. "This has put us into the position of reducing our workforce. We have diversified our product mix, however, we have to match our production to the industry."
The statement added, "At this point, we're not aware of available positions at other Guardian facilities."
