LA PORTE - The La Porte County Council is imposing a hiring freeze on all non-emergency services departments.
Councilwoman Lois Sosinski pushed for the freeze at Monday's meeting so that employment cuts could be made through attrition without resorting to layoffs.
Under the new motion, any position opening in those departments through retirement or an employee quitting will have money for the wages cut.
If the department head feels that the position needs to be filled, he or she could ask the council for permission to hire.
The freeze will begin Jan. 1, 2010.
