Encompass Health Corp. plans to build a freestanding 50-bed rehabilitation hospital in Fishers, the Birmingham, Alabama-based company announced Monday.

The new hospital will focus on patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries, including strokes and other neurological disorders, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions, according to publicly traded Encompass, the nation’s largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals.

The 56,000-square-foot facility, expected to open in 2027, will be located at 14000 E. 136th St., near Ascension St. Vincent Fishers Hospital, north of East 136th Street and east of Olio Road. Plans call for the hospital to feature all private patient rooms, a therapy gym with advanced rehabilitation technologies, a suite focused on daily living activities, in-house dialysis, a dining room, pharmacy and therapy courtyard.

The health company said the hospital will have 80 full-time employees in its first year.

Encompass said the hospital will offer physical, occupational and speech therapies with care provided by specialized nurses, therapists and physicians.

“We are pleased to further expand our presence in Indiana to help meet the growing need for inpatient rehabilitation services,” Abe Sims, president of Encompass Health’s MidAtlantic region, said in written remarks. “We look forward to providing high-quality, compassionate care to help patients recovering from illnesses and injuries regain independence and return to their communities.”

Encompass also has two other locations in Indiana: Encompass Health Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital in Newburgh and its satellite location, Encompass Health Deaconess Rehabilitation Hospital-Downtown, in Evansville. Nationally, Encompass operates 172 hospitals in 39 states and Puerto Rico.

The announcement comes as Franciscan Health Indianapolis also this month said it plans to build a standalone inpatient rehabilitation hospital. The $60 million, 40-bed Franciscan facility is expected to be built over the next two years, with the capacity to add another 20 beds in the future, according to the nonprofit Catholic health system. Currently, Franciscan operates a 22-bed rehabilitation center on the sixth floor of its main hospital, on South Emerson Road near Interstate 65.
