SEYMOUR — A proposed smoking ban has elicited differing opinions from citizens, and Common Council members plan to hold a meeting to seek public input.

Common Council member and governmental affairs chair Mary Voss updated her fellow council members Monday night on the possibility of the city going smoke-free.

While several council members said they had heard from constituents in favor of the proposal, Voss said she heard from several who opposed it.

The mix of opinions, she said, only enforced the need for a public meeting.

Council plans to set a date for the public meeting after drafting an ordinance.

The issue first arose during a council meeting two weeks ago when John McMillan, of Clean Air Movement in Seymour, presented a proposal supporting a smoke-free city.

Louisville, Ky., Bloomington, Columbus and other communities have prohibited smoking in public places, including restaurants.
