SOUTH BEND -- A countywide smoking ban will take effect April 10.
St. Joseph County Council members voted 7-2 Tuesday night to override the St. Joseph County Commissioners' 2-1 veto on Jan. 26 of its ordinance, according to WNDU, news-gathering partner of The Truth.
As first proposed and approved by the council in January, the ordinance prohibits smoking in all restaurants, work sites, retail stores and shopping malls, county-owned parks and recreational areas, sports arena, restrooms and other common-use areas.
Fines assessed would go into a St. Joseph County Health Department account to be applied toward ordinance enforcement.
The council's human services and criminal justice committee decided to attempt an override of the commissioner's veto and placed the issue on Tuesday night's council agenda.
When the council adopted the smoking ban on Jan. 17, the vote also was 7-2.
