Crop insurance isn’t designed to make farmers whole but will help most farmers avoid devastating losses due to drought, experts and farmers say.
According to Purdue University agricultural economist Chris Hurt, crop insurance is elective; approximately 75 percent of Indiana crop acres are covered by some form of crop insurance.
Crop insurance is different from car insurance.
“It’s not meant to make them financially whole,” said Hurt, who noted that most farmers typically insure between 65 and 85 percent of their crop.
