HAUBSTADT—Haubstadt Town Council Monday endorsed a proposed .2 percent County Option Income Tax that would be deducted from local paychecks beginning in January.
The first local government entity to vote on the local tax, Haubstadt’s endorsement accounts for 4.7 percent of the total 51 percent county population needed to pass the tax.
Fort Branch Town Council is expected to weigh in on the matter next, accounting for 8.3 percent of the county population.
The Gibson County Council will consider the resolution to adopt the tax at their 9 a.m. Oct. 13 session.
The county council represents 44.6 percent of the county population.
Spindler said the new tax would mean that someone with $25,000 annual income would pay $50 a year in county taxes that would be distributed to various government entities, including schools, townships and libraries.
The county council conducted a public public hearing last week.
Town Council President Kenny Reinbrecht said the tax will generate money for police protection, but wouldn’t impact elderly on a fixed income.
