ELKHART — The recreational vehicle industry has experienced tremendous growth in 2016, topping its own expectations.
But as the numbers of shipped RV units has gone up, so has the number of recalls, causing concern for some.
Reliable statistics for the number of RV recalls in 2016 are hard to find. The National Transportation Safety Board has no readily accessible statistics accounting for the number of recalls from year-to-year.
RV Daily Report, an online site that tracks news from the RV industry, released its own statistics on RV recalls in a November story. They show that the RV industry as a whole saw 17 percent more recalls in 2016 compared to 2015.
The industry saw 148 recalls in 2016, through Nov. 21, compared to the 123 for the entirety of 2015. RV Daily Report also noted that as the year went on the number of recalls increased from 52 in the first half of the year to 96 from May to November.
RV Daily Report said that Forest River had the most recalls through Nov. 21, responsible for 27 percent of all recalls. The next closest manufacturer was Newmar at 12 percent, Jayco had 10 percent of all recalls, while Keystone sat at 4 percent and Heartland at 2 percent.
