It was an emotional night in City Hall that ended with council members receiving a rare standing ovation from the public as they officially joined the fight backing same-sex marriage.
The Bloomington City Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to pass a resolution supporting marriage equality and taking a stand against the proposed House Joint Resolution 6, or HJR-6.
State lawmakers are expected to vote in the upcoming legislative session on HJR-6, a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would ban same-sex marriage and prohibit any legal status “identical or substantially similar” to marriage. If it passes this spring, it would be put to voters in the fall.
The resolution, co-sponsored by three council members, outlines the negative economic impacts of banning same-sex marriage and the positive effects of allowing it, such as being beneficial for children, the elderly and the physical and mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
