MUNCIE — The construction of the area’s first compressed natural gas filling station could also bring with it a large green space area with the possibility of bike trails and parks.
Bill Smith, president of the Board of Sanitary Commissioners, said the district has hired consultants to take a look at improving the area to the north of the CNG filling station site in the 800 block of East Centennial Avenue, which has a May 1 target opening date.
“We want to better the area, there’s no doubt about it,” Smith said this week.
The Muncie Sanitary District last year bought nine acres of land across from its offices along East Centennial Avenue, some of which will be used for its $2.9 million compressed natural gas filling station.
But city officials said the station’s construction was a perfect opportunity to continue its push for “quality of life and place” initiatives that began with its sewer separation project, in which they hoped to postively affect neighborhoods both above and below ground.
