Two men living in Bloomington who were detained last week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been charged with illegally re-entering the United States after previously being deported because of criminal convictions.
The men, 36-year-old Martin Cortez-Lopez and Jamie Ortiz-Guzman, 46, were arrested during a 3-day “immigration and enforcement removal operation,” according to a news release from the federal district attorney's office.
The operation took place in Bloomington and Evansville between April 29 and May 1. A 28-year-old man living in Evansville also was detained.
The men face 2 to 10 years in prison if convicted, the news release said. They are in federal custody.
“The charges follow an immigration and enforcement removal operation. Each of the three men are Mexican nationals who illegally returned to the United States and were found by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the Southern District of Indiana,” the release said.
