MICHIGAN CITY — Shady Creek Winery broke ground Thursday on a major building expansion designed to transform the business and property into a state-of-the-art winery destination within the Midwest.

The Schwartz family bought the 20-acre winery and tasting room from the Anderson family in 2020 with plans for a $2.5 million expansion and renovation.

The winery, located on Tryon Road, already features a wine production facility with patios and porches, fireplaces and a tasting room.

The proposed expansion project consists of an event space, barrel room, private tasting rooms, retail shopping, exterior lounge spaces and a complete site redesign.

Over the past year, the existing winery had already been transformed with a new interior design palette, new warehouse and production building, according to a statement from Shady Creek.

The new building will connect the existing winery with the production facility and feature heavy timber construction – a unique building type, according to Marissa Odom of Ancon Construction of Goshen, which will oversee the design and construction of the project.

“The building’s superstructure uses exposed timber columns, timber beams and special building connections. The incorporation of wood plank ceilings and stone walls allows the building to fit into the heavily wood vernacular landscape,” she said.

“And the use of glass creates visual references to the natural landscape.”

Shady Creek Winery is family-owned, and strives for a great customer experience, with private events and tastings providing an educational experience between process and product, according to the owners. They said the expansion will offer a unique variety of settings for small to large groups.
