Indiana State Police are turning to commercial truck drivers for help in cracking down on human trafficking.

"Commercial motor vehicle drivers serve as the eyes and ears of America, often working in locations where human trafficking may occur, such as truck stop parking lots, rest areas, or commercial facilities that could potentially exploit labor trafficking victims," according to ISP.

"By training members of the commercial motor vehicle industry to recognize the indicators of human trafficking, we can collectively help combat this issue."

The ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division partnered recently with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance as part of a human trafficking awareness initiative.

"This initiative seeks to empower commercial motor vehicle drivers, motor carriers, law enforcement officials, and the general public with crucial knowledge about human trafficking, including how to recognize its signs and what actions to take if they suspect someone is being trafficked," according to ISP.

Troopers reportedly discussed the problem of human trafficking with drivers, and distributed 1,481 wallet cards and other brochures to drivers of the 696 commercial motor vehicles they inspected.

"In addition, the initiative included 10 outreach events and eight media interviews to amplify awareness."
