WEST LAFAYETTE, IN — A new housing development could soon encompass the western side of Burnett Creek Elementary School, aiming to increase the quality of life for its residents and surrounding neighbors.

The OASIS Community, a non-profit founded in 2020 focused on creating a safe and inclusive person-centered living space for disabled individuals, plans to begin construction by the end of the year, according to documents filed with the Tippecanoe County Area Plan Commission.

Construction of the gated community would come in three phases, the document lays out. In the first phase, 35 flexible housing options are planned with the option for families to own or lease, including single-family homes, duplexes and quadplexes.

Leased units would be owned and managed by OASIS Community, while duplexes and homes would be owned by residents or their financial trusts. All common areas and grounds would be maintained by a non-profit subsidiary of OASIS Community, which would be paid for through community fees, the documents said.

In addition to the construction of homes, Phase One would include the construction of a 19,200-square-foot enrichment center, the plan documents said. The facility would be built based on "Universal Design and Accessibility Standards" with several amenities, including a gymnasium to double as an event center, a community kitchen, an indoor gathering space that expands onto an outdoor patio, a teaching kitchen, a sensory room, a dedicated art room, multipurpose meeting rooms, office space and a coffee shop.
