LAFAYETTE — At May’s Lafayette School Corporation work session meeting, the board introduced a proposed policy aimed at addressing how artificial intelligence language modeling programs could be used within the district.
With the rise of AI programs like ChatGPT, schools across the country are trying to determine their role in modern education. Some are opting to ban its use outright out of fear of plagiarism, while others are opting to implement its use in hopes of creating a blueprint for the future of education.
The LSC is opting to do a mix of both, banning it for student but allowing it for teachers. At the moment, the Lafayette school district is the only one in Tippecanoe Country addressing AI on its campuses.
AI banned for students, allowed for teachers and staff
The new proposed policy tries to address the concerns of students potentially using AI language models to plagiarize assignments, using it to cyberbully other students and for non-school related activities and functions.
This policy would ban students from using AI language models, and if they are caught breaking this new policy, the district could potentially revoke a student’s privileges to use technology for school-related activities.
