Delivery company FedEx has plans to build a distribution center in Northern Vanderburgh County, according to documents associated with the project.

Indianapolis-based developer Scannell Properties filed a project application last month with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. The project is described as a "small package sorting and distribution facility" that will occupy nearly 255,000 square feet, the application says.

As a size comparison, Evansville's Eastland Mall occupies just over a million square feet.

According to that application, the FedEx project will be located along Norm Wagner Drive, a frontage road west of U.S. 41 and south of Baseline Road. The site is just south of Azteca Milling, and roughly across the highway from North High School.

According to the Vanderburgh County Assessor's Office, Scannell purchased the property Dec. 3 from Vectren Utility Holdings. The address is 15200 N. U.S. 41 and the parcel size is 44 acres.

The facility is to be part of the FedEx Ground network, which delivers small packages (up to 150 pounds) within North America.

FedEx Ground is based in Pittsburgh, and its facilities include 33 hubs that range in size from 114,000 square feet to 825,500 square feet.

During a quarterly earnings call in September, FedEx Ground President and Chief Executive Officer Henry Maier said the company is in expansion mode to keep up with the growth in e-commerce.

Maier spoke of "three major hub projects that will come on line in fiscal year 2016," though he did not specify the location of those hubs.

"It is almost unprecedented that we will bring three major hubs online in the same year," Maier said during that call.

It's not clear whether the Evansville project is considered a hub location.

FedEx's fiscal year begins June 1.
