Discount grocer Aldi will break ground for a new store at 9 a.m. Monday at a building site at 1640 Hirschland Road.

The location is off the intersection of Burkhardt and Oak Grove roads on Evansville's East Side.

A store containing 17,000 square feet of space is planned.

Dave Winc, an Aldi spokesman based in Louisville, Ky., said the construction is expected to be completed and the store opened by around Dec. 1.

Aldi also plans to build a second Evansville store on a site off the Lloyd Expressway and Rosenberger Avenue, next to Office Depot, on the West Side.

That store also is expected to be ready for opening around Dec. 1, Winc said.

The chain plans to locate in Owensboro, Ky., next year, but the building site there is undetermined.

Aldi currently has more than 7,600 stores across Europe and the eastern United States.

The stores carry a single, private-label brand in a variety of groceries and household products.

The items are offered at prices that are 40 percent to 50 percent below regular grocery store prices.

Aldi's U.S. headquarters are located in Batavia, Ill.
