The Scott's Food & Pharmacy grocery store on North Anthony Boulevard will be torn down and the adjacent pharmacy store will be closed in three weeks, The Kroger Co. announced Friday morning.
In a statement, the Cincinnati-based company said the grocery store is "beyond repair." The grocery store was closed earlier this year after structural problems were discovered.
Workers at the grocery and pharmacy stores will be offered positions at other Fort Wayne-area Kroger stores, and the merchandise at the pharmacy store will be discounted.
The Scott's Food & Pharmacy store at 4120 N. Clinton St. will be remodeled over the next year, and Kroger plans on adding a fuel station at that store. The remodeled store and fuel station are expected to result in additional jobs.
At an event held Friday morning at the North Clinton Street store, a company spokesman also said Kroger will open its second Marketplace store in October. The $16.5-million store is located within the Village of Coventry shopping center.
The area's first Kroger Marketplace store opened last year at Dupont and Coldwater roads.
In December, the company will hold a grand reopening event for its Kroger store at 7008 Bluffton Road, which was remodeled at a cost of $2.1 million.
“Kroger made a major commitment to northeast Indiana in 2007 that has provided more than $105 million in local project investment and job security to approximately 2,000 associates," Bob Moeder, Kroger Central Division president, said in a statement. "We now have a group of stores that have been remodeled to meet the unique expectations of each store’s customers. Those stores provide outstanding employment opportunities for our associates."
