Electric vehicles account for about 4.5% of new vehicle sales in Indiana, less than half the national rate, according to a new report.

That's up from 3.5% the previous quarter and 3.6% a year earlier in Indiana, according to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation's "Get Connected Electric Vehicle Report."

Nationally, electric vehicles accounted for 10.1% of light-duty vehicle sales in the third quarter, up from 9.1% in the second quarter and 7.1% a year earlier, according to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association that represents electric and autonomous vehicle makers.

The study looks at electric vehicle sales in all 50 states. Electric vehicles account for 7.5% of the market share in Illinois and 4% of the market share in Michigan, the report found.

Indiana has 1,787 EVs on the road, including 439 DC fast chargers that can charge battery electric vehicles in 20 minutes to an hour, according to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation. The Hoosier State has 1,316 publicly available charging outlets, which is a ratio of 24 electric vehicles for every public port, ranking 35th nationwide.

Nationally, an estimated 4 million electric vehicles are on the road. The country has 151,303 public charging outlets, including 34,611 DC fast chargers. That's a ratio of 24 electric vehicles for every public port.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation estimates nearly 1.1 million more public chargers, including 147,000 DC fast chargers, are needed to meet the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s necessary infrastructure estimate for 2030 to support wider adoption of electric vehicles.

To meet that goal, about 414 chargers would have to be installed every day for the next 7.2 years according to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation. Roughly three chargers would have to go online every 10 minutes until the end of 2030.
