SOUTH BEND — Coronavirus cases in St. Joseph County are holding steady, though cases from the University of Notre Dame rose sharply in the past week.

According to the university’s COVID-19 dashboard, there were 27 positive cases reported Monday, 48 on Tuesday, 37 on Wednesday and 43 Thursday. Tuesday’s 48 positive tests was higher than all but four days in the fall semester.

“We’re obviously concerned by this early rise in numbers and are looking for ways to address it, including examining social contact and whether there have been breaches of our policy,” said university spokesman Paul Browne.

Browne said Wednesday’s decrease in reported cases was a positive sign, but added the university continues to approach the situation with caution.

“If we’ve learned anything last semester and all year, it's that we have to remain vigilant,” he said.
