SOUTH BEND — Following a rising number of coronavirus cases on campus, the University of Notre Dame announced it will limit seating capacity in dining halls, restrict visitors in student housing and pivot to virtual activities starting Thursday.

But in a letter to students Wednesday, university officials say classes will continue in person.

The changes come after Notre Dame reported 48 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among faculty, staff and students on Monday and 46 more cases on Tuesday.

The university began "return-to-campus testing" for students, faculty and staff on Jan. 18, ahead of the start of the spring semester, and has continued increased surveillance testing after the return from winter break.

Erin Hoffmann Harding, vice president for student affairs, and Mike Seamon, vice president for campus safety and university operations, said in their letter to students Wednesday that a majority of cases are asymptomatic and that contact tracing shows transmission is happening in "unmasked interaction between students in small, informal social settings."
