As if Indiana lawmakers don't have enough to do overhauling the state's broken property tax system, they now are wading into the immigration morass - an area best left to the feds.

The bill's author says the state will send a message to the federal government. We would suggest a sharply worded letter rather than an ill-conceived state law.

Senate Bill 335 cleared the Pensions and Labor Committee last week by a 10-1 vote. Sen. Mike Delph's bill would establish stiff penalties for employers who hire illegal immigrants. Sanctions would increase for repeated violations, eventually resulting in revocation of all licenses.
