INDIANAPOLIS - Key lawmakers grilled higher-education officials about tuition increases and, in a surprise move, asked Indiana and Purdue universities to reconsider recent hikes and ponder a freeze instead.

"The public isn't understanding this at all, and they are about to tear down the Statehouse about this," said Sen. Luke Kenley, R-Noblesville, chairman of the State Budget Committee. "I think we've got a problem that's maybe been building. Now we hit the wall on acceptability."
