Indiana University plans to test all students for COVID-19 once they arrive on the Bloomington campus for the fall 2020 semester. Exactly how this will work and who will cover the cost has not been disclosed publicly.
"All I can tell you at this point is we’re still working on that part," said Chuck Carney, IU spokesman.
The plan to test all IU Bloomington students was included in an email sent Friday. However, that email was focused on a relaxation of a previous COVID-19 testing requirement.
The university announced July 10 that all IU Bloomington students were required to be tested within the 10 days prior to returning to campus for the fall 2020 semester. At that time, the only other IU students required to get tested before returning to campus were those living in university housing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, IU Southeast and IU South Bend.
In the days after that email was sent, university officials learned of concerns about access to testing, Carney said. The university was not planning to provide COVID-19 testing or cover the cost. Instead, students were being directed to free COVID-19 testing locations.
