Indiana University will require some students to be tested for COVID-19 before the fall semester begins.
All students at IU Bloomington are required to be tested. Students living in on-campus housing at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, IU Southeast and IU South Bend are also required to be tested. All other IU students are encouraged but not required to be tested at this time.
There is no process for exemption from the testing requirement. Even students who are taking an exclusively online course schedule will still be required to be tested if they are enrolled on the Bloomington campus or living in university housing on the aforementioned campuses.
The decision to only make testing required for certain students is based on recommendations from the university's restart committee, said Chuck Carney, IU spokesman. Bloomington has the largest number of students, so it made sense to have a blanket policy for that campus, he said.
Other campuses aren't as densely populated, but university officials wanted to make sure students living in close proximity with one another were tested.
