INDIANAPOLIS | Legislation to include LaPorte County in the Northwest Indiana Regional Bus Authority was unanimously approved today by the state Senate's Homeland Security, Transportation & Veteran's Affairs Committee.
House Bill 1742, sponsored by state Sen. Jim Arnold, D-LaPorte, would allow LaPorte County or Michigan City to adopt a resolution to become a member of the Northwest Indiana Regional Bus Authority. The board of the authority would have to approve the membership before the county or city could join.
Upon being approved as a member, the executive of the county or city would appoint a member to the Regional Bus Authority's board and a member to the Citizens Advisory Council.
"Public transportation is an important component for the growth and success of LaPorte County," Arnold said. "Giving the county the option of joining the authority not only benefits our area, but the entire region."
The bill now is eligible for consideration by the Senate.
