INDIANAPOLIS | The state Senate voted 46-1 Tuesday to allow LaPorte County to join in the push to bring regional bus service to Northwest Indiana.

House Bill 1742 paves the way for the LaPorte County Council or the city councils of Michigan City and LaPorte to negotiate their participation in the Regional Bus Authority. Those officials and the authority, which now covers Lake and Porter counties, would have to agree to terms, including annual membership fees.

"I'm pleased that the entire Senate recognized the importance of giving the county the option of joining the authority," said Sen. Jim Arnold, D-LaPorte. "Access to public transportation is key to LaPorte County's future growth and success."

The legislation, which the House approved 99-0 in February, goes to the governor.
