Even with a tuition freeze in place at Purdue University, the sticker price for a full-time, in-state freshman remains at more than $23,000.

In 2012-13, tuition and fees for an in-state freshman totaled $9,900. Books and supplies were $1,370. Room and board on campus cost about $10,378. Personal expenses — such as clothes, laundry and travel — were estimated at $1,820. That’s a sticker price of $23,468 for a Purdue education.

But are students and parents really paying that much?

According to the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center website, the average net price for full-time, on-campus Purdue students was $13,541.

The net price is the sticker price minus grants and scholarships. It does not include loans, which must be repaid.
