MUNCIE— In 2012-13, tuition and fees for full-time, in-state freshmen attending Ball State University totaled $8,980. The estimated cost of books and supplies was another $1,020. The typical tab for on campus room and board was $8,622. And personal expenses, such as travel, clothes and laundry, were estimated at $2,868.

That’s a total sticker price of $21,490.

But according to the U.S. Department of Education’s College Affordability and Transparency Center website, the average net price for full-time beginning students living on campus was only $13,049.

Data on the recently updated website confirm what Ball State and other college officials have been preaching for years as the cost of a college education continues to escalate: Many students and their families do not pay the full price of admission.

The net price equals the sticker price minus grants and scholarships but not loans, which must be repaid.
