Only one of the 12 to 15 ethanol plants with a strong chance of being built in Indiana are owned by farmers, according to Indiana Prairie Farmer, a trade publication targeted at farmers.

That's in stark contrast to Iowa, Nebraska and other states in the western corn belt, where a number of the plants are owned by farmers.

Other states have laws making it easier to organize the plants under co-operative ownership, the magazine said.

Cardinal Ethanol in Winchester is the only farmer-owned project in Indiana.
