For those in the Purdue University community who were expecting Jan. 14 to be greeted by “The Blade” when Mitch Daniels stepped into his role as university president, the first 100 days of his reign went by as expected — mostly.

Daniels, who earned the nickname from President George W. Bush, trimmed waste where he saw it, brought in a few trusted colleagues from his past, and as usual, made a few bold moves.

Not the least of which was instituting a two-year freeze of tuition for students attending the West Lafayette campus. Or squelching merit raises for staff earning more than $50,000 per year. Or cutting the position of Purdue’s top marketing administrator, who pulled in nearly $250,000 last year.
