The decision to freeze merit pay increases for Purdue University’s highest-earning staff members was short-lived.
President Mitch Daniels said Tuesday that in lieu of the freeze, which was first announced in March, all employees — including administrators, staff and faculty — will be eligible for a 1 percent merit raise this year.
The plan, which gives supervisors the option to allocate the 1 percent pool across their departments, is expected to generate revenue to the tune of $7 million over the next two years to help cover the cost of a $40 million, two-year tuition freeze at the West Lafayette campus.
The freeze on merit raises first applied to all senior administrators, deans and professional staff earning more than $50,000 per year and was expected to generate $5 million over the next two years. Now those people will be eligible for the 1 percent pool.
