State officials have increased pressure on public higher education institutions to increase college completion rates while keeping tuition down. Journal & Courier
A high-stakes staredown is smoldering between Indiana officials and the cash-strapped Ivy Tech Community College system.
To mitigate the college’s snowballing list of deferred investments in technology infrastructure and hiring academic advisers and full-time teaching faculty — which Ivy Tech now values at more than $75 million — board members in early June passed a stairstepping tuition increase valued at more than five times the state’s recommendation.
That was days after college officials, in an attempt to save cash they say the state hasn’t adequately provided, confirmed they are studying whether to shutter 20 leased satellite sites.
