FORT WAYNE – For Betty Barry, the idea of moving from her downtown Fort Wayne apartment into a house of her own brings thoughts of mowing, appliances, insurance and property taxes.
She and her husband, Ted, now in their mid-70s, are former homeowners and have considered doing it again. But since selling a farm in Michigan 10 years ago, Three Rivers Apartments has been their permanent home.
“For us, it’s just an easy place to be here,” Barry said. “We love to be downtown. We’re really downtown people.”
While the vast majority of northeast Indiana residents live in homes they own, 2010 census figures show the growth of rental housing outpaced owner-occupied units last decade.
