SOUTH BEND - Construction cranes still dot the skyline at the University of Notre Dame, belying the nation's harsh economic downturn.

Building projects continue, and there is no wage or hiring freeze at the university. But those under the Golden Dome are keeping a close eye on expenses and future commitments.

"If the economy stays the way it is now, I'm pretty confident we won't have any layoffs. I think we've all been shaken by the last six months, so one just can't make any guarantees," said John Affleck-Graves, Notre Dame's executive vice president and chief fiscal officer.
