Wednesday was the beginning of the holiday shutdown at AM General's Humvee plant in Mishawaka.
It also marked the beginning of a series of layoffs that will affect 250 of the plant's workers.
About 70 workers won't return when the plant along McKinley Highway reopens Jan. 4, said Don Taber, AM General unit chairman for UAW Local 5.
