SOUTH BEND — Opponents of a controversial proposed 7,200-acre mega industrial park near New Carlisle felt heartened Tuesday night that maybe they had gained ground in efforts to stop the project.

After a long hearing, members of the Area Plan Commission voted unanimously against three petitions to rezone more than 1,400 acres in the target development area from agricultural to industrial to use.

County economic development director Bill Schalliol, who has shepherded the industrial park plan, said he would work with the individual property owners who had made the rezoning requests and "kind of regroup and figure out what the next steps are."

The rezoning petitions will next go before the County Council, which has final say and could accept or reject the Area Plan Commission’s unfavorable recommendations.

The last three hours of a six-hour meeting were devoted to the three rezoning petitions.
